As your business matures so should your marketing strategy plan. Periodically taking the time to refresh it can help ensure you’re targeting the right people, with the right message, while also maximizing each marketing dollar spent.

Fact is, marketing continues to change at a lightning speed and business are quickly needing to adapt. An estimated 84 percent of American adults use the internet, which has driven online marketing to the center stage for a number of marketing campaigns.

Plus, an estimated 80 percent of internet users also own a smartphone, which has helped to cement the importance of mobile in any online strategy.

Keep in mind updating your marketing plan requires you to carefully evaluate your current strategy, its effectiveness and where you want to go. Consider the following questions when updating your plan:

  • What message do you want to get across? Think about the value proposition of your products and/or services. Develop a marketing message that sums up that value or point of differentiation in one sentence. Then, keep that message in mind when creating all of your materials and strategies.
  • Who is your target market? Consider the size and demographic of your target customers, as well as the amount of money they spend on products or services like yours. Also consider the type of media they use. Knowing which magazines, websites, social media sites and other media outlets your target market uses will help you determine where to most effectively market your business.
  • How will you reach your audience? Once you know who your target customers are and have an idea how to reach them, your plan should outline which media outreach methods you will use and the frequency that you will use them.
  • What are your goals? Create goals that you think are reasonable based on your current strategy. Then, track your results and make changes to your plan accordingly. For example, if you see notice that certain marketing methods are generating more leads and sales than others, consider putting more of your marketing budget there.
